Meru National Park, in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya, is untamed Africa at its most alluring. The

animals are shy and unused to their human counterparts. This park is singled out as the driest in the country with little rainfall, although it is crisscrossed with numerous rivers and streams running off nearby mountains. The landscape is blessed with dense ribbons of vegetation with baobab trees and palms running through dry valleys. The park is best known for Elsa, the lioness of Joy Adamson’s Born Free. With herds of elephant and northern species such as Grevy’s zebra, oryx and reticulated giraffe, one can observe animals without being disturbed by another soul. Lion and leopard are also found here. The swamps of Meru are home to most of Meru’s 5,000 buffalo, sometimes seen in herds of more than 200. Lesser kudu, gerenuk and cheetah can be found along with hippo and crocodile within the Tana River area.

under the stars, or just leave them under the shelter of the roof. The platforms are also fitted with en-suite bathrooms, and there is a thatched dining area and fire pit. There are two sets of three platforms. The Kiboko Star Beds are a twenty minute drive from the lodge and located among a kopje of rocks in one of the eastern valleys overlooking the ‘Kiboko’ waterhole. The second set, The Koija Star Beds, are slightly further from the main lodge (a thirty minute drive) and are positioned on the banks of the Ewaso N’giro River and are reached by footbridge from the opposite bank. The latter is an exciting joint venture between Loisaba and the Laikipiak Masai people and guests will be hosted by members of the local Koija community.

Quad biking is offered at an extra cost, with the income from this activity benefiting the local school – so far three classrooms have been built with the proceeds
